The 2026 Indy 500: Rosenqvist's Upset

When the white flag flew at the 110th Indianapolis 500, the crowd did not expect the name at the front. Felix Rosenqvist — a driver who had shown consistent speed but had never quite broken through at the Brickyard — navigated the chaotic final stages with calm that belied the pressure, crossed the bricks first, and joined a very short list of Swedes to win motorsport's most famous race. Kenny Brack was the only previous Swedish Indy 500 winner (1999); Rosenqvist is now the second.

The upset matters beyond the result. Rosenqvist had entered 2026 with expectations reset after a difficult 2025 campaign. His Indy 500 win — the biggest single prize in open-wheel racing — immediately repositioned him in the championship conversation and reminded the paddock that the race erases histories and rewrites them in a single afternoon.

Alex Palou: The Chase for a Fourth Straight Title

Championship leader Alex Palou is doing what he does: being exceptionally fast at the right moments. Five wins through twelve rounds of the 2026 season — the latest at a rain-delayed, heat-shortened Nashville Superspeedway — have put him 83 points clear with a full summer schedule still to run. Palou won the NTT IndyCar Series title in 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025; a fourth consecutive championship would put him in territory almost no one in the modern era has reached.

David Malukas (374 pts) jumped to second with a Nashville podium despite a Saturday practice crash that briefly put him in hospital, and Kyle Kirkwood (370 pts) sits four points further back. The road courses and street circuits ahead — Portland, the new Streets of Markham, Washington D.C. — will test Palou's cushion before the season closes with the Milwaukee Mile doubleheader in late August.

The 2027 Move That Reshapes the Grid

While Palou runs away with 2026, the paddock is already rearranging around him. In July, Arrow McLaren confirmed that Scott Dixon joins them for 2027 — ending a partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing that started in 2002 and produced six championships and the 2008 Indianapolis 500. Dixon turned down a multi-year offer to stay. By his own account the group had plateaued and after 24 years in one place it was time for a change.

He is not going alone. Felix Rosenqvist, who won the 110th Indianapolis 500 earlier this year, signed with Arrow McLaren at the same time. Put those two next to Pato O'Ward and the team has assembled a three-car line-up holding six championships and two Indy 500 wins between them.

For Chip Ganassi Racing the foundation is still there — Palou is the best one any team could ask for. But losing a six-time champion removes a reference point that a team leans on more than it realises, the driver whose feedback calibrates everyone else's. Who fills that seat is the most interesting unanswered question left in the paddock.
